BNY Mellon’s 24/7 Treasury Settlement: Eliminating Weekend Lag in US Bonds
23.07.2026 11:51
BNY Mellon, the oldest bank in the United States, is pioneering a 24/7 settlement system for U.S. Treasury securities, aiming to eliminate the traditional weekend settlement lag. This initiative leverages distributed ledger technology (DLT) to create continuous financial rails, allowing for real-time, round-the-clock trading and settlement of Treasuries. The move addresses inefficiencies in the current T+1 settlement cycle, where trades executed on Friday are not settled until Monday, exposing counterparties to overnight risk. By enabling instant settlement, BNY seeks to enhance liquidity, reduce systemic risk, and modernize the backbone of global finance. This development is particularly significant for institutional investors and could set a precedent for other asset classes, including cryptocurrencies, as it demonstrates the practical application of blockchain-like technology in traditional markets. The project is currently in a pilot phase with select clients, and if successful, could redefine how the $26 trillion U.S. Treasury market operates.
